Lake Vermilion is a premier walleye lake in the area. The lake is also home to northerns, small and large mouth bass, and crappies. Vermilion is also gaining notoriety as a world class muskie lake.
Over the past several years Lake Vermilion has hosted many professional fishing tournaments. The lake has over 40,000 acres of water with 1,200 miles of shoreline and over 365 islands. With its spectacular scenery, Lake Vermilion is an outstanding choice for boating or camping.

Brief History
Early in the 1960’s, US Steel deeded McKinley Park to the Township of Breitung for use by the township residents. Over the next several years a campground was established, along with picnic areas and of course the fabulous swimming beach. Over the years, the campground has evolved from a few tent sites, an outhouse and 2 changing buildings into a 60 site park, with an office, store, beautiful bathrooms/showers, docks, 3 picnic shelters, basketball court, playground, fish cleaning station and the absolute best sunsets on Lake Vermilion! McKinley Park is proud to host the Vermilion Range Old Settler’s Picnic the third Saturday of July every year. The 103 anniversary of this celebration will be held this July. We also host church picnics and family gatherings in our picnic shelters. We encourage all residents of the township and visitors to stop by and enjoy our beautiful campground, picnic areas and beach!
